Another year, another wonderful response from all our supporters on World Mission Sunday and throughout Mission Month! Here are some of the many highlights of a month of hope, union and solidarity with our global Church family…

A day to be hope to the world

Amid the often devastating situations and headlines from around the world, World Mission Sunday was a moment of grace when we came together to bring hope to our sisters and brothers in need, through prayer and giving. We want to say a huge thank you to every parish which celebrated World Mission Sunday.

At St Peter’s and St Philip’s parish in Shrewsbury Diocese, Missio volunteers led a World Mission Sunday Holy Hour. Organised by Margaret, and led by Deacon John, this special time of prayer focused on the Mission Rosary’s Glorious Mysteries. Pope Francis emphasised prayer as missionaries’ primary activity; the motivating force through which missionaries bring education, healthcare and Christ’s hope to poverty-stricken communities.

Our amazing volunteers

Local Secretary, Helen, visited an impressive four churches in Plymouth Diocese to share our message for World Mission Sunday. She created a lovely display of this year’s appeal and shared news from Missio-supported missionaries in Myanmar.

Our volunteers never cease to inspire and humble us. Thank you so much Helen, for being a ‘Missionary of Hope’ in your community.

Your generous donations

On World Mission Sunday we shared messages from Myanmar, where missionaries are doing all they can to serve people who have been displaced and traumatised by the ongoing civil war. Many of you were moved to donate, learning about the incredible work that Sr Regina, Sr Rosa and their fellow missionaries are doing in very challenging circumstances.

In Clifton Cathedral, Polly and Sam shared their message, prompting supporters like Richard to give.

He said simply:

‘I’m donating because of what I heard this morning at Mass about Sr Regina and the efforts of missionaries like her who share the Gospel.’

Thank you so much to everyone who, like Polly and Sam, volunteered during World Mission Sunday, and who, like Richard, gave what they could in support.

Together across the world

Missionaries work in some of the world’s most troubled areas – often at great personal risk – and they are, in a very real way, comforted and fortified by your prayers and support. Sr Veronica, who we featured in our WMS2023 Appeal, continues to bring reconciliation between communities in conflict in Nigeria. Thanks to your support, she is able to work alongside the local community to build understanding, skills and forgiveness which change people’s lives. On World Mission Sunday, we received this message for you:

‘Happy Mission Sunday, and thanks for your collaboration and unwavering support in my mission of putting smiles on the vulnerable.’

Thank you!

A huge thank you to everyone who took part in World Mission Sunday, and for continuing to bring hope and strength to missionaries and the communities they serve. As Pope Leo said:

‘While the whole Church is missionary, today we pray especially for those men and women who have left everything to bring the Gospel to those who do not know it. They are missionaries of hope among all peoples. May the Lord bless them!’
