Our Day of Many Colours reimagined for days of fun, family and faith this summer

This summer, why not try some of our suggestions for activities to do as a family, a community, or a personal journey? We take some of our favourite activities and suggest ways to tailor them to suit your summer season.

As the long holidays get underway again, it’s always good to have a few ideas to keep everyone happy and occupied. Many of us will be looking after children and grandchildren, meeting the wider family, or planning events as a community.

The Day of Many Colours is a special celebration supported by our children’s branch, Mission Together. Based around the Mission Rosary, it encourages children to unite with their sisters and brothers in Africa, the Americas, Europe, Oceania, and Asia as a global family.

Day of Many Colours celebrations often take place in schools during summer school term, if the kids are missing their schoolfriends or becoming glued to their devices, why not invite other local families to come together for a day of fun? Of course, this can be as simple and organic as picking a day and meeting in the local park or recreation ground, but to give it a Day of Many Colours twist you could try one of these.

Make it…

… Active: Sports Day of Many Colours: Assign colours for each family or child to wear, from red, green, white, yellow and blue. Organise team games or races. Bring footballs, frisbees, cricket kits, rounders bats and any other family-friendly outdoor equipment. Alternatively, use our resource Games from around the world to get everyone moving. Adults and children can play together – it’s all about taking part! To keep mission front and centre, start with the Mission Together prayer. Perhaps raise some funds for the Little Red Box by selling snacks and drinks.

… Social: Picnic of Many Colours – bring blankets in the five colours and ask people to contribute food from every continent. Enjoy exploring different cultures through sharing some delicious food!

… Prayerful: Holding our global family in prayer is central to our mission to ignite God’s love around the world. The Mission Rosary is the perfect way to do this, with each decade a different colour, corresponding to a different continent. Follow us on social media or follow the weekly mission rosary tag to get our weekly prayer points. Meanwhile, our activity sheets about children from different countries (for children aged 5-7 years and age 8 – 11) and our interactive world map are great places for children to start learning about our global family and get inspired to pray and raise funds for them.

Help to ignite God’s love around the world

Fundraising is a brilliant way to involve everyone in raising money for Missio and our children’s branch, Mission Together. There are more ways to fundraise than we can possibly count, but here are some of our favourite ways to get involved throughout the year. Click here>>
