I awoke this morning to the sad news of the death of our beloved Holy Father, Pope Francis.
No doubt, warm tributes will continue to be offered across the world in the days and weeks to come. They will speak of his natural humility, his strength of faith, his joyful disposition, and his wonderful sense of humour.
He has led the Church through difficult times, always reminding us of the joy of the Gospel and our responsibilities as missionary disciples, especially towards the poor and marginalised people of the world.
In my own personal meetings with him in Rome I was impressed by his stamina, his wisdom, and his tranquil spirit that came from his profound relationship with the Risen Christ.
When he spoke to you personally, he focused only on you and gave you his full attention. Few of our leaders can achieve this with the same sincerity which was a hallmark of Pope Francis’ ministry.
Our Holy Father’s death follows closely upon our joyful Easter celebration with its promise of the life of the world to come. And when he meets the Risen Lord face-to-face, he shall know him fully just as he is fully known. They will meet as friends; they always were.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let your perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace and rise in glory. Amen.
